Event Details
Beginning Wednesday, June 29 at 5:30 and each week through the summer, we will begin to share with residents of the Pines of Perinton the Bounty Baskets that we receive from Moll Farms. We invite you to go deeper in your hunger activism by coming one (or more) Wednesday evenings to assist in the food distribution. We are also in need of assistance with picking up produce and bringing it to the Pines on Wednesday, August 17. If you can help with this, please let Rick or Beth Walker know.
You do not need to sign-up in advance, you can just come. Plan to arrive right at 5:30 pm. Some weeks the food distribution goes very quickly. You may wish to bring a lawn chair to sit on.
If you come, here’s what to expect:
- We are there to share abundance and to learn about them
- This experience can help us reflect on our own purchasing and eating habits in the face of others’ scarcity
- People of many ethnicities and races will come to collect food
- Some will not speak much English or are difficult to understand
- Some will not know what some of the produce is or how to fix it
- There will be tension between some of the groups
- Some of the people have food insecurity to the point that they take so much there is not enough to go around
- Some people will need help carrying their bags back to their apartments
- If you are male, some females will not want to engage
- The produce will go fast
- People we interacted with last year have already begun to build relationships with us
- We are not there to change people’s habits, ideas, or life situations
- If you, or others you know, have excess produce, you are welcome to bring it to share as part of the food distribution
Here are some conversation starters, which help to build relationships (ask Lil or Julie to coach you, if you need help):
- How will you cook or fix this fruit or vegetable?
- Who taught you how to cook?
- What foods are your favorite?
- What foods are festival or holiday foods?
- Who else likes to cook in your family?
- What will you eat with this?
Serving as a Hunger Activist in this way, might prompt you to ask yourself:
- What would it be like to miss your favorite foods?
- What causes food insecurity or food deserts?
- Why is there tension between groups?
- What importance does food have beyond filling a belly?
