Between Sundays for Week – There’s Enough at the Table – Between Sundays for the Week of October 6, 2025

In Luke 17:5-10, Jesus’ disciples plead, “Increase our faith!” What could prompt such a request? What do you think the disciples are wanting when they seek an increase in faith?

To answer those questions, it helps to understand what prompts their demand, “increase our faith!” In the opening verses of Luke 17, Jesus has been teaching about mercy and accountability, and how to live in community. Just before their plea, Jesus says to them, “If another disciple sins, you must rebuke the offender, and if there is repentance, you must forgive. And if the same person sins against you seven times a day, and turns back to you seven times and says, ‘I repent,’ you must forgive” (Lk 17.3-4).

Given all of this, is it any wonder that the disciples respond to Jesus’ instructions with their cry: Increase our faith! What Jesus asks of the disciples is hard, and at times, it’s outright impossible.

But notice Jesus’ response to their plea. He doesn’t buy into their assumption that they need more faith in order to live as he teaches. In responding to the disciples, Jesus tells them you don’t need more faith, the very littlest amount is sufficient! The more that we seek is already present. We don’t need more faith, instead we are called to trust that God’s abundance is already here!

When we gather at Christ’s table, or at our Sunday Table at BLC, or at the tables we set in our homes or at work . . . there is enough!

Jesus’ message to the disciples, is Jesus’ message to us: within this community there is already enough! Enough faith. Enough grace. Enough love. Enough forgiveness. Enough mercy. Enough resources.

Thanks be to God!

Faith Connection at Home

Welcome to October! Here is a Faith 5 framework to use this week with your family. Enjoy!
Share: What was something you rejoiced in this week? What was something you lamented for this week? (note: before they answer, check with your kids and discuss what the words rejoice and lament mean. This will also help them when they hear these words during worship)
Read: Luke 17: 5-10 (if you have children old enough to do so, have them look up this verse in their Bible. You can also find this story in the Spark Story Bible on page 394, “A Seed of Faith” for a younger child’s version of the bible passage)
The apostles said to the Lord, “Increase our faith!”  The Lord replied, “If you had faith the size of a mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you. “Who among you would say to your slave who has just come in from plowing or tending sheep in the field, ‘Come here at once and take your place at the table’?  Would you not rather say to him, ‘Prepare supper for me; put on your apron and serve me while I eat and drink; later you may eat and drink’?  Do you thank the slave for doing what was commanded?  So you also, when you have done all that you were ordered to do, say, ‘We are worthless slaves; we have done only what we ought to have done!’ ”
Talk: When have you felt like you had a lot of faith? What about times when you had only a little faith? What do you think having faith looks like in everyday life? What is our “job” as followers of Jesus?
Pray: Before praying, ask members of your family about who has taught them about faith at different points in their lives. Note their names and insert them into this prayer:
Holy God, Today we pray for (insert names). We give thanks for these people and for the others that you place in our lives who show us your love. Help us to use our faith to show others your love. Amen.
Bless: (before saying these words to each other, dip a finger in a small bowl of water and use it to make the sign of the cross on one another’s forehead or hand, reminding each other of baptism and being named God’s child) God gifts you with faith.

Ponderings

Chris and Lisa Meetze, BLC members, shared a message of how they give and what they receive when they share God’s abundance with others.

If you missed any of their video message shared in worship on Sunday, you can view it here.

Chris and Lisa, provide examples of what God can do when we trust there is enough!
