Between Sundays for the Week of October 5, 2026

Sunday worship marked the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi, renewer of the church, who died in 1226. Born into the family of a wealthy merchant, Francis gave up his inheritance to serve poor people. He formed the Order of Friars Minor (called Franciscans), who took on poverty and and the task of preaching “using words if necessary.” Francis had a spirit of gratitude for all of God’s creation.

In worship on Sunday, we welcomed to Bethlehem Father Michael Calabria, a Franciscan friar, to proclaim the word. Fr. Michael is a longtime friend and teaching colleague of Pastor Amy and is Director of the Center for Arab and Islamic Studies at the Franciscan Institution, St. Bonaventure University, where he is Professor of Arab and Islamic Studies. Reflecting on the gospel reading from Matthew 11:25-30, “Come to me, all you who are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest,” Father Micheal’s sermon provided a powerful reminder of what it means to lay aside our burdens and follow the way of Christ.

On the Feast of Saint Francis, we remember that praise and thanksgiving for all God gives us takes many and various forms! Sunday worship celebrated some of the many ways God’s good creation raise our Hallelujahs!

P.S. Listen to the full worship service (including Father Michael Calabria’s sermon that starts with the gospel reading at 21:00) here. Faith Connection at Home

Here is a Faith 5 to squeeze in this week. This week is a reflection of the parable of two brothers in the vineyard and speaks about how our words AND our actions can effect our community.
Talk: Where did you feel God’s love this week? When did you need God’s love but it was hard to feel or find?
Read: Matthew 21: 23-32
Discuss: Some people say, “Actions speak louder than words.” What does that mean? How does that fit this story? Can you think of a time when you said you wouldn’t do something, but then you did it? How about when you said you would do something, but you didn’t? How does what we say AND what we do matter in our daily lives?
As a family, discuss places where you can be hands, feet, voice, or heart of God in your family or community… then make a plan to go and say or do one of those things, knowing God is with you always!
Pray: God, help our beliefs transform our actions. Help others see how you are changing our lives when we serve as your hands, feet, voice and heart in our world. Amen
Bless: May you know Jesus’ mind and spirit in your heart today.

Ponderings

Saint Francis, who wrote his Canticle of the Sun late in life, celebrated all of creation as sisters and brothers. Because of his reverence for the created world, Saint Francis has come to be associated with pet blessings. Consider blessing any pets that are part of your home this week using these, or similar, words.

Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures.

You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land.

You inspired Saint Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet.

By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan.

May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation.

Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures!

Amen
