Between Sundays for Week of May 20, 2024

“Those who sing, pray twice.” These words, often attributed to Martin Luther, were first voiced by Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan in the 4th century. Our ancestors in faith passed on psalms, hymns and spiritual songs from one generation to the next. In congregations around the world, including at Bethlehem, we continue the tradition of sharing and singing songs of faith each time we gather to worship.

When the Spirit of Christ birthed the church on Pentecost, God’s own breath filled the disciples. Each time we sing, speak, raise our voices, we do so filled with this same breath of God!

This past Sunday, filled with the breath of God’s Spirit, Bethlehem raised our collective voice and offered praise through music to God who walks with us in all things. Listen to our Music Sunday worship and hear the many ways God’s Holy Spirit is still helping us to pray!

Ponderings

We gave thanks for the ministry of Dr. Jim Jefferis, Chancel Choir Director, on Sunday and celebrated his retirement from music ministry. This song served as Sunday’s benediction. This recording of it was made during the pandemic.

May you see God’s light on the path ahead when the road you walk is dark.
May you always hear even in your hour of sorrow, the gentle singing of the lark.
When times are hard may hardness never turn your heart to stone.
May you always remember when the shadows fall–
You do not walk alone.
