How Can I Help?

Mar 30, 2020

So many have already asked this question! Here are some of the opportunities to serve in the coming days that we’ve identified so far. We are keeping this list updated on our website under the ‘BLC Today’ tab. Please contact the church office or the co-Pastors if you can help in any of these ways.

Help us help you! Let us know what you need! Your faith community wants to support you – so tell us how we can help.

We have received information about community needs and are happy to share! Do you know of a need or way to serve in our community? Contact the church office to include it on this list.

1. Got a sewing machine or a serger? Your help is needed to fight the virus! There are a few opportunities to sew face masks:

Heritage Christian Services needs masks to protect the vulnerable population they serve. Donations should follow the patterns below. Contact Pastor Hoffman if you have finished masks to coordinate for pickup.

———>Mask recommended from Deaconess Hospital, Indiana:   https://youtu.be/9tBg0Os5FWQ. The instructions ask for 1/8” elastic. You could use 1⁄4”. There is currently a shortage of this elastic and several sites are backordered. If elastic is not available, elastic hair bands can be used

———>The instructions ask for flannel for backing but that is not essential. Fabric should be a closely woven cotton, preferably 100% if possible. Fabric should be pre-shrunk before sewing.

———>Mask from Olson St Luke’s Hospital, Iowa-contains a filter pocket and nose wire. Hospital researched. Pattern and instructions attached. At this time, we would finish these masks per instructions:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnVk12sFRkY

2. If it’s safe for you to do so, consider donating blood. There is a critical shortage in our area! Check out the American Red Cross for more info. Use the link below to search by location or date. Be sure to make an appointment; they may not take walk-ins. https://www.redcrossblood.org/

3. Supplies for the most vulnerable: Do you have any cleaning products, disinfectants, Clorox wipes, or hand sanitizers to spare? Are you sewing masks? Heritage Christian Services welcomes your donations. Contact Pastor Hoffman to arrange for pickup.

4. Run errands or do grocery shopping for someone who cannot (or should not!) be out and about

Do you have another idea? Let us know!
